In 1933, Roosevelt ended the circulation of the double eagle and made it illegal to own. That year, the nation was taken off the gold standard making them no longer legal tender. The nation abandoned the gold standard in order to soften the effects of the Depression, because people were hoarding gold due to financial instability, and the fact that European nations had done so as well to fund the very expensive World War I.
